>> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald good afternoon, everyone, i'm michelle griego. frank is off. we're following two developing stories today. fire crews fighting several wind-driven blazes across the north bay and there are new arrests in the boston bomb investigation. three people have been charged with helping the suspects right after the blast. first we start with our team

coverage on the firefight. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec tells us a fire has ravaged large sections of wine country and high winds are only making the problem worse. >> reporter: the smoke is very thick in the air right now here in knights valley and the winds were so strong overnight, it carried it up to 60 miles away. it's an early start to this year's fire season, and this home among its first victims. >> we're watching our house with the flames going up to it. >> reporter: he and his wife have lived here for 19 years. overnight, an oak tree was blown over by the wind taking down a power pole which started a fire that spread to their home. >> nobody was here. the winds blowing so hard -- [ crying ] >> it's an experience that no one should have to go through. >> reporter: nearby in knights valley, two fires burned to combine 200 acres by morning. they started at around 1 a.m.

and the firefight continues this afternoon. resources are still being gathered from around the state. cal fire wasn't fully ramped up for wildfire season yet. >> we are in the process of training our seasonal firefighters this week. and they come on next monday. >> reporter: and in the meantime, local departments are helping out. >> mountain home -- [ crying ] >> -- volunteers, they just -- the fire department, they got here first. >> reporter: and about 30 miles southeast, 75 acres are burned. this hillside caught fire at around midnight. >> we have had some spotting issues from embers being thrown from the fire. >> reporter: while this one is almost out, this knights valley fire, known as the yellow fire, is still raging. and the season has barely begun. >> i'm very grateful, pancake breakfast is mother's day and i'll be there, believe me. >> reporter: we'll have the

latest on this fire tonight at 5:00 and 6:00 on kpix 5. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> fire will hit their peak wildfire capacity on july 1. our team coverage continues with lawrence karnow in the kpix 5 weather center. he is track the latest on the red flag alerts in the bay area. lawrenc. >> still blustery in the bay area. mount diablo has gusts every over 50 miles per hour. so red flag warnings continuing outside in the north and the east bay. we have the red flag warnings up continuing right into the diablo range. we have some hot afternoon temperatures expected again up into the 80s even some low 90s. and then the humidity levels less than 30%. so yeah, the recipe is right for fire conditions until 6 p.m. the rainfall amounts, you remember we had all that rain before the first of the year, and then once we hit january, it pretty much shut off. from january to april 2013, just over 3" of rain.

that is now an all-time record for the driest drought on record for the last 164 years. that is simply amazing. we'll have more on the weather, it's only going to get hotter now, coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you. bay area communities need all the help they can get as fire season kicks into high gear. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran explains the big boost starting today for the east contra costa fire district. >> 164, 364 -- >> reporter: and with that the word was out. station 54 in brentwood is open for business once again. >> one of the hardest times in my career was 10 months ago having to close down the stations. >> now to be here to watch it reopen again is exciting for the district and for the firefighters who work here. >> reporter: the station was one of three shut down last july after a partial tax measure failed. since then, east contra costa county fire protection district was able to reopen two stations thanks to federal funds from

the safer grant. >> it's taken a lot of effort for a lot of people to get this happening today. and, you know, this is something for the community. >> reporter: and it couldn't come at a better time. several areas in the bay are on high fire alert. but here in brentwood there's a little more excitement mixed in. >> i think it's a red letter day versus a red flag day. [ beep beep ] >> reporter: fire officials say at least half of fire calls from east contra costa county come from brentwood and re- opening station 54 is pivotal to the area. >> it affected the entire community. this section of town is important to us. >> reporter: the owner of this sandwich shop says he hopes the county can come up with a long- term solution to keeping the station open. >> i'm just thrilled that it reopened. we really need one downtown, you know? a lot of businesses here and i would hate to think that, you know, we have to wait for an

outside station to come in to put out a fire. >> reporter: it's still bittersweet for firefighters here at this station. we're told that the grant only lasts a couple of years, meaning they will still have to find another funding solution in the future. in brentwood, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> the east contra costa fire protection district says they plan to reintroduce another parcel tax measure in the future. and now some developing news in the boston marathon bombing case. authorities arrested three more suspects. cbs reporter vinita nair explains how they may be connected to what happened after the blast. >> reporter: three additional suspects are under arrest in connection with the boston marathon bombings. cbs news has confirmed two of the three suspects will be charged with making false statements and harboring or aiding the prime bombing suspects the tsarnaev brothers after the fact. they were reportedly college classmates of the surviving suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. the third suspect will be charged with making false statements.

the suspects have been in jail for more than a week on allegations that they violated their student visas. the tsarnaev brothers are accused of killing three people and injuring more than 260 others with two bombs that were placed near the finish line of the boston marathon. police caught up with the brothers three days later after releasing surveillance videos and photos of them at the scene. bombings. they allegedly also killed and m.i.t. campus officer in his car before one brother was killed in a shootout with police. the younger brother was taken into custody after he was found hiding inside a boat. investigators are trying to determine if the brothers acted alone or had extremists influencing them. vinita nair, cbs news, new york. >> and this just into our newsroom. we have learned the identities of the three men. azamat tazhayakov and dias kadyrbayev are charged with conspiring to obstruct justice. a third man [ indiscernible ] is charged with making false statements to federal

investigators. according to an fbi affidavit, the three men removed dzhokhar tsarnaev's backpack from his dorm room at the university of massachusetts at dartmouth three days after the bombing. a big welcome back for aaron hern celebrating his 12th birthday at home in martinez. he spent 10 days in a boston hospital from injuries from the bombing. we expect to hear from the family tomorrow. his doctors expect him to recover fully. some video newly posted on youtube appears to show monday's deadly crash of an american cargo plane in afghanistan. u.s. investigators are using this video in its probe of the crash. the boeing 747 plunged shortly after take-off from bagram air force base killing all 7 american civilians on board. the plane was reportedly carrying military vehicle to the united arab emirates. what's believed to be part of a hijacked 9/11 plane has been recovered. new york city police removed it today. the part was wedged between two

buildings blocks from the world trade center. officers used a pulley system to extract the 255-pound piece. it's a may 1 tradition around the world to celebrate international workers day. every year demonstrators rally on may day to support public union employees and immigrant laborers. more than 80 countries mark the may day holiday. its origins coming from the end of the 19th century when american unions fought for an eight-hour workday. marches and rallies are planned in the bay area. at 3:00 the march in san francisco begins at 24th and mission streets. in oakland protestors will rally at fruitvale plaza on east 12th street. and in san jose, the rally and march will start at our lady of guadalupe church. the committee on the bad bolts on the bay bridge are leading today in sacramento. leaders with the metropolitan transportation commission are talking to the vendor who supplied the bolts that snapped

on the new eastern span. one idea, crews may add a metal saddle to do the bolts' job in supporting seismic structures. one week from today we expect to learn more about a timeline for repairs and whether the new span will open on time for the labor day weekend. how far would you go for a raise? one company's offer that comes way permanent catch. >> parents are still in control of their daughter's lives at this point and they're concerned they are going to be bypassed. >> parents weighing in on new rules for the morning-after pill. what may lead the fda to lift all age restrictions. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

right now. you can see the dow is down 115 points. a new report shows u.s. factory activity last month dropped to its slowest pace this year. this comes just a day after the s&p 500 closed at a record high of more than 1500 points. soon, girls as young as 15 will be allowed to buy the morning-after pill without a prescription. it's a major policy change by the food and drug administration. in today's healthwatch, danielle nottingham explains why the age restriction may be dropped altogether. >> reporter: children as young as 15 will soon be able to buy plan b drugs over the counter. until now you had to be 17 to buy the morning-after pill. now all you need is identification showing you're 15. groups like the family research council say young girls should not be making these decisions without their doctors or families. >> parents are still in control of their daughters' lives at this point. and they are not -- they are

concerned they are going to be bypassed. >> reporter: but women's groups say there should be no age restrictions. >> it makes it more burdensome for women of all ages. >> reporter: the age restriction may be dropped. earlier this month a federal judge ruled the fda must make the drug available to anyone regardless of age. there is still no final decision in that case. plan b does not end a pregnancy. it prevents ovulation if taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. the drug's maker has to change its packaging to meet the fda's new requirements. that is expected to take a few months. danielle nottingham, cbs news, silver silver spring, maryland. >> the fda's ruling applies only to plan b one step and not to generic versions. an airline that prides itself in its high-tech accommodations is finally flying out of silicon valley. san jose mayor chuck reed joined virgin america personnel to celebrate the new service at

mineta international airport. today the airline begins four daily roundtrip flights between san jose and l.a.x. virgin founder sir richard branson says he markets the service to silicon valley travelers and he is hoping to add destinations. >> the kind of airline i think that works for people who live in san jose. >> among the amenities virgin america provides are wi-fi, power outlets near every seat, and google terrain view maps. that would be cool. so look at the maps, right? >> so you don't have to put your phone in airplane mode now? you can just enjoy yourself. >> i don't think that's what that means, is it in. >> i don't know. she is pretty high-tech. very impressive. >> very wealthy. >> yes, he is. we have some changes coming our way today. it is starting to heat up again. of course, we have been talking about the high fire danger. the winds still blowing as we look toward pleasanton right now. the clouds blowing in that breeze. it will be breezy in throughout the afternoon and the temperatures already beginning

to warm up outside. 77 degrees in concord. it's 83 now in santa rosa. 79 in san jose. and 72 in san francisco. now i think as we head throughout the afternoon we'll still seat breezy conditions that's going to be warm to hot in some spots inland. warm inside the bay and cooler coastside but mostly clear tonight. the winds begin to back down somewhat. but we are going to see enough of an offshore wind that we are going to actually heat up tomorrow and that's why a heat advisory is in effect, as well. some of these temperatures into the mid-90s. so dry offshore winds continuing today. looks like that will strengthen overhead as that ridge builds in but the winds will start to subside. still, red flag warnings until 6 p.m. in the north and east bays. we are seeing some of those winds right now continuing to gust over 50 miles per hour. but the computer models show it starts to slacken. by this evening, things calm down in many spots, just a gentle breeze overnight tonight. temperature-wise, we are going to see these numbers of soaring this afternoon as high as 87 degrees in san jose.

about 67 degrees in pacifica. 84 in hayward. east bay temperatures moving up into the 80s and also some low 90s. toward the bay, we'll see as high as 85 degrees in oakland. 80 in san francisco if we can hold off out sea breeze and 88 degrees in santa rosa. next couple of days, we are going to see those temperatures soar but then toward saturday and sunday, much cooler weather on the way with more clouds too. time for a preview of the annual pleasanton half marathon with mobile weather. kpix 5 reporter roberta gonzales is live in downtown pleasanton. >> reporter: yes, lawrence. we are in downtown pleasanton right on main street. not only is it one of the hottest towns in the bay area today and tomorrow, but it will be one of the hottest spots this weekend. we'll talk about that half marathon. right now let's check in with mobile weather. the current conditions, it is 85 degrees and thank goodness the winds have finally died down. it was a gusty morning here in the east bay town of

pleasanton. ryan is here with us today from usa productions. ryan, tell us about the half marathon. >> the second annual pleasanton half marathon and 5k fun run is supporting all the amador -- the booster clubs for amador valley and foothill high schools. >> reporter: that's so cool and generous of your company as well to give back to the community in that way. in fact, we have some boosters here behind us, don't we? >> whoo! >> reporter: it's a strong representation. amador valley high school booster club but let's not forget the foothill high school boosters, as well. first of all, the race takes place this sunday and for those who are not familiar with the half marathon, walk us through it. >> it's 13.1-mile run, flat and maintained with marshals and volunteers and hydration aid stations. so we do a lot of things for the community to give people -- to get people focusing on health and wellness. >> reporter: how many people do you anticipate? >> around 1500. >> reporter: so how much money do you expect to give back to the community? >> right around $14,000 to $15,000. last year we donated a little
